Chicago, IL, May 28, 2009 --(PR.com)-- If you ever were asked "Did you read Royko today?" or if you remember Slats Grobnik or Dr. Kookie, mark Saturday, June 13, 2009 on your calendar -- today.

That's when David Royko, the son of Pulitzer-Prize winning columnist Mike Royko, along with WGN Radio's Rick Kogan, and Actor JoBe Cerny will present a rare and intimate look at the early and very personal “literary” efforts of a writer who entertained, informed, annoyed, cajoled, impressed and other-wise communicated with us about the many foibles of the human race.

Their presentation, to be given at a noon luncheon in the Stoney River Restaurant in Deerfield, will benefit Family Service, a Highland Park-based not for profit social service agency serving families in Northern Cook and Lake counties. Advance purchase tickets, $50, ($45 for seniors) are available at www.familyservice.org or by calling the agency at 847-432-4981. Seating is limited and tickets will not be available at the door.

The letters are funny, poignant, romantic and self-serving, in the style that Royko used decades later to deflate pompous politicians and society elite, shame us with his searing commentary on human behavior (or lack of it) and illuminate the darkest (and, on a rare occasion, the brightest) parts of our lives. As the late Studs Terkel observed, “In the spirit of Nelson Algren, the Chicago bard he (Royko) most admired, he always walks on the wild side and thus infuriates, amuses, deeply touches and enriches his readers.” Family Service Board President, Bernard Schlifke commented, “The letters reveal a side of Mike Royko we’ve never seen, in addition to showcasing the developing Royko style that readers of more than 200 daily newspapers came to know and love.”

Founded during the Great Depression, Family Service is a leading agency dedicated to strengthening families, individuals and communities in Northern Cook and Lake Counties.

At some point, every family needs help. At that point, Family Service will be there.
