Sports Car Market Magazine Showcases $2.5m Spitfire Fighter Plane on Cover

For the first time in the 21-year history of Keith Martin's Sports Car Market, the magazine is seen without an automobile on its cover

Portland, OR, May 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- For the first time ever in its 21-year history, an airplane graces the cover of Keith Martin's Sports Car Market magazine. The Supermarine Spitfire, which sold for $2.5m, is immortalized as the WWII fighter plane which - piloted by "The Few"- saved England in the Battle of Britain. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the iconic fighter served through the war to the dawn of the jet age. More than 23,000 were built and only about 200 remain today, with 50 actually flying. What's more, this is the first two-seater Mk IX Spitfire to be offered at public auction in over 20 years.

Read more about the Spitfire and other important cars featured in the July issue, including a 1968 Lotus 51R sold for $35k, a 1964 Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus Deluxe sold for $38k, and a 1999 Ferrari 355 F1 Spider sold for $85k. Plus, this issue is loaded with analysis of 175 more collector cars with sales totaling $35m.
