New Forensics Title Transforms Students Into Criminal Investigators

Portland, ME, May 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Walch Education, a leading publisher of educational materials, has announced the publication of Hands-On Science: Forensics. The new title targets middle- and high-school students and may be ordered at www.walch.com.

The latest addition to the acclaimed Hands-On Science series studies the science behind the scene of the crime. Like the characters in popular TV shows, students conduct experiments to determine exactly who did what—and how. Working from crime scenarios, students use chemical, biological, photographic, and other means to study the evidence and draw logical conclusions.

“We developed the 20 activities in Hands-On Science: Forensics to have a number of applications,” notes Walch Education’s Senior Director of Programs and Partnerships, Jill Rosenblum. “They can serve as a complete, turnkey introductory program to a forensic science class. Or, they can be an enrichment experience for biology, chemistry, physics, or earth science classes. But no matter how the title is used, it’s an engaging approach that gets get students to use – and understand – science while they investigate criminal activities.”

The 20 activities in Hands-On Science Forensics include:

A Car as a Crime Scene Matching DNA
Blood Pattern Analysis Microscopic Fibers
Car Accident Missing Person—Your Teacher
Components of Soil Photographing a Crime Scene
Density of Glass Fragments Physical Properties of Soil
Detecting Blood Processing a Crime Scene

Each activity includes vocabulary and materials lists, teacher notes, procedures to follow, recommended Internet sites, and assessments. Hands-On Science: Forensics addresses National Science Education Standards.
