Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to Keynote Young Women’s Health and Empowerment Event
The Young Women’s Health and Empowerment Event, hosted by the Tigerlily Foundation, will underscore the importance of younger women becoming their own best advocates, particularly when it comes to their own health and knowledge about breast cancer.
Reston, VA, June 03, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Attend a one of a kind reception, hosted by the Tigerlily Foundation, with Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz as the keynote speaker.
Tigerlily Foundation’s Young Women’s Health and Empowerment Cocktail Reception, to be held on June 11, 2009 at the American Newswomen’s Club on Embassy Row, will feature several speakers, with Wasserman Schultz delivering the keynote, with the purpose of educating young women about the importance of being engaged in a community dialogue about issues that affect them, particularly as it pertains to their health, community involvement and breast cancer education and advocacy. The event will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. and will be at 1607 22nd Street, NW, Washington, DC. Tickets can be purchased at www.tigerlilyfoundation.org/events.html.
Rep. Wasserman Schultz recently announced that she had successfully battled breast cancer and in March, and introduced the Breast Cancer Education and Awareness Requires Learning Young Act, or EARLY Act. This legislation directs the Centers for Disease Control to develop and implement a national education campaign about the threat breast cancer poses to young women of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and the particular heightened risks of certain groups. The campaign will help educate young women and better enable health care professionals to identify the specific threats and warning signs of breast cancer, which will lead to early diagnoses and saved lives. The bill calls for $9 million a year from 2010 to 2014. The EARLY Act will also provide grants to organizations that support young women diagnosed with breast cancer in order to receive the assistance they need—including social and psychological support, fertility preservation counseling, and recurrence prevention training.
Following is an excerpt from her press release on the EARLY Act, “I found my cancer early because of knowledge and awareness,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “I knew that I should perform breast self-exams, and I was aware of what my body was supposed to feel like. We need to ensure that every young woman in America can rely on more than luck because their survival depends on it.”
Hulya Aksu, Founder of I Am Modern Magazine, a Northern Virginia Women’s Lifestyle Magazine focusing on the issues of women and mothers will also be a speaker.
Angela Peabody, Founder of Global Woman Magazine will be speaking about the importance of giving young women and girls a voice, and how through empowerment, young women can be a powerful catalyst for change.
Maimah Karmo, Founder of Tigerlily Foundation will be present. She is excited about this event, “helping younger women realize the importance of being their best advocates in every aspect of their lives, and being a part of the change they seek in the world. In order to create change, one needs to have passion and dedication to being the best you can be in this lifetime. It is about advocating for the things you believe in and using your life to make a difference. Our Young Women’s Health and Empowerment Event is about engaging young women in the first of many dialogues about how they can be a catalyst for change and make a difference in the world. We’ll start this conversation by having this forum of speakers that are doing just that.”
This event will also be a call to action to young women to be a part of the solution. “I created this organization to educate women under 40 about breast health and support those affected by breast cancer. It is important that as a service provider for young women, we invite them to participate. Tigerlily Foundation supports Rep. Wasserman Schultz’ EARLY Act, which will bring awareness and education to young women in terms of breast cancer. Young women need to be equipped with the right tools that will allow them to be a partner in their breast health. Without our young women, we have no future," Maimah Karmo
