Los Angeles, CA, June 10, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Bicycle Dreams, a new documentary by filmmaker Stephen Auerbach, is now available on DVD through the film’s official website www.bicycledreamsmovie.com. The film, which is enjoying continued success at film festivals nationwide, tells the story of the Race Across America (RAAM), an epic 3000-mile bicycle race that challenges riders to cross the country in just ten days.
First held in 1982, RAAM is considered the most challenging sporting event in the world. Top competitors ride over 300 miles per day and sleep only a few hours each night. With little prize money at stake, the fundamental goal of the race is simply to finish, a challenge half of all riders fail to meet.
“Bicycle Dreams is an up-close look at what RAAM riders go through,” says Auerbach. “They deal with searing desert heat, agonizing mountain climbs, and endless stretches of open road. And they do it all while battling extreme exhaustion and sleep deprivation. It’s a great subject for a film.”
To capture the mammoth scope of the race, Auerbach worked around the clock with a complement of 18 cameras. Embedded camera operators traveled inside the riders’ crew vehicles, gaining unprecedented access to the cyclists and their teams. Their footage captured emotional and physical breakdowns, late-night strategy sessions, and great moments of personal triumph, all in intimate detail. Auerbach then took on the enormous task of editing hundreds of hours of material into a powerful, inspiring look inside the most difficult race on Earth.
TheLoveOfMovies.com calls Bicycle Dreams "a spectacular and heartfelt film that offers a riveting portrait of extreme courage in the face of inhuman obstacles. Bicycle Dreams is an artistic triumph that renewed my belief in the power of desire and the strength of the human will."
Bicycle Dreams has won major awards at the Fallbrook and Breckenridge film festivals and continues its nationwide festival tour with appearances in Newport Beach, Hoboken, San Francisco, Minneapolis, and others. The official website of Bicycle Dreams, which includes a trailer, images, and contact info is www.bicycledreamsmovie.com.
