Part Time, Hourly Workers Rejoice: Affordable Healthcare Available

Part Time, Hourly Employees have New Quality Alternative for Insurance, EssentialCare Provides Affordable Limited Benefit Health Insurance.

Columbia, SC, August 15, 2006 --(PR.com)-- In industries dominated by part-time and hourly workers, providing affordable and quality healthcare insurance has been a significant challenge to employers seeking to recruit and retain good employees. A vast majority of human resource directors say that offering benefits is a critical factor in recruitment and retention, yet most of those same respondents said they did not offer a plan for part-time or hourly staff.

Traditional limited benefit health insurance plans have been available for more than a decade, but only until recently have these plans become popular as employers recognize the importance of insurance for their part-time workers, according to limited healthcare benefits expert Susan Nicolai.

Nicolai, marketing director of Planned Administrators, Inc. (PAI), explains that affordable and quality limited healthcare benefits are available to part-time and hourly workers through a newly launched program called EssentialCare. The program provides hourly and part-time staffers added discounts with PPO networks, co-pays for doctor’s office visits and prescriptions, a toll free number to contact a registered nurse, and the ability for members to make up missed payroll deductions directly to PAI.

“Savings and flexibility, as well as easy administration for the employer, remain central to the success of the plan,” Nicolai explained. “This isn’t intended to be coverage against catastrophic illness, but what this provides is a way for many previously uninsured workers to afford basic daily medical needs. Savings on even limited treatment means that many will seek medical attention where they previously could not afford to do so.

Employers have the flexibility to choose the coverage that they feel best suits their needs. Enrolled workers then choose from the benefits their employer offers. With premiums ranging at about two hours pay, enrolled workers enjoy a level of healthcare which includes doctor office visits, prescription drugs, emergency room visits, as well as outpatient coverage. To help encourage participation, employers have the option to subsidize a portion of the premium.

Tim Mayfield, director of human resources for steakhouse chain Logan’s Roadhouse said: “We rely on a lot of younger, part-time employees who are generally in good health. What they’re looking for is the ability to see a doctor when they catch the flu or have prescriptions filled. EssentialCare fits their needs perfectly and saves them a good deal of money compared to more traditional offerings.”

McDonald’s recently switched their McCrew Care plan to EssentialCare’s third-party administrator, PAI, and underwriter, BCS Insurance Company. Big companies are paying attention to the plans they offer part-time workers to make sure they are meeting the needs of their employees. Nicolai explains that any organization with 500 or more part-time or hourly workers can sign up for EssentialCare.
