New Reading Recommendation Service Available to North Carolinians

Raleigh, NC, June 11, 2009 --(PR.com)-- After reaching a deal with online information giant Ebsco Information Services, NC LIVE, North Carolina’s consortium for the state’s nearly 200 public and academic libraries, acquired access to NoveList K-8 Plus, a readers’ advisory database designed specifically for children in grades K-8, as well as NoveList Plus, a similar service for adults. These new products came at no additional expense to NC LIVE and are available to all North Carolinians free of charge.

NoveList Plus and the K-8 version provide readers with book recommendations and can be used for free at home by North Carolinians with an Internet connection, or in local libraries. Updated and expanded monthly, the services include lists of award-winning fiction, non-fiction, book lists arranged by genre and subgenre, feature articles, and thematic units. Books are also searchable by author, title, series name, reading level, and plot to retrieve descriptions, reviews, discussion guides, and feature articles related to books of interest.

As summer reading programs are gearing up at schools and public libraries across the state, NoveList Plus and NoveList K-8 Plus are enjoying a great amount of use. On the last day of school Dayna Durbin, the Media Coordinator for Durham Public Schools at W.G. Pearson Magnet School is handing out gift bags filled with pencils, bookmarks, and Chick-fil-A free meal coupons, and allowing students to check out 5 books each to be returned in August when school starts again. Durbin said, "NoveList is a great tool for students, teachers and librarians. It helps my students find great books to read, especially the ‘Read-alike’ feature, which helps them find books similar to those they already like. I use it often throughout the school year to recommend books, and I'm promoting it now in my school's summer reading program as a perfect way to find good summer reads."

Melissa Thibault, Executive Director of LEARN NC, a program dedicated to successful practices in K-12 education at the UNC Chapel Hill School of Education, said, “As the end of the school year is approaching, NoveList offers a valuable service to young North Carolinians, students, teachers, and parents looking for summer reading materials. It’s an exciting way to get children interested in reading and improve literacy skills. NoveList Plus is an excellent resource for anyone looking for something new to read, as well as teachers hoping to supplement their instruction. Parents who can’t believe their child is reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Twilight for the fourth time will be grateful for features like Recommended Reads and Author Read-alikes.”

First grade Wake County teacher, Elizabeth Whitaker, also believes this resource will be a useful tool in helping her discover new materials to support the curriculum. “NoveList K-8 Plus will help me to spice up my lesson plans and locate important fiction and non-fiction materials for use in the classroom. I can do a search on any topic and find a list of recommended books. The “Working with Kids” section of the database provides interesting resources for connecting reading materials to the work we are already doing in class.”

Novelist Plus and K-8 Plus are available through North Carolina libraries’ websites or through www.nclive.org. This service is scheduled to continue through at least the end of 2009.

Patrons from all the state's public libraries, as well as students, faculty, and staff from any of North Carolina's community colleges, independent colleges and universities, and public universities, can access all NC LIVE content at no cost.
