CineSky Hits TVC Production Milestone with Red Camera
Thailand film company maximizes time, money for clients
Bangkok, Thailand, June 19, 2009 --(PR.com)-- It takes a combination of advanced technology and the brains to maximize that technology to produce three 30-second TVCs in just one month. But this incredible feat was recently accomplished in Thailand by a local digital film company with its finger on the pulse of innovation.
“CineSky is a Boutique Digital Film and VFX Production Company that utilizes the most current technology and techniques to create memorable, high-impact visual solutions,” says company founder Mr. Chum Lelayuwa. “We provide creative film and digital media services that maximize project value and brand image.”
This leading-edge approach was used by CineSky Films to produce three innovative digital television commercials for Smart Mobile in Cambodia. The client brief was to create commercials that resonated with a Cambodian audience though the TVCs would be filmed in Bangkok. CineSky was not only able to provide the Digital Production services for the three TVCs but also was responsible for the Post-Production.
CineSky’s modern production and post-production visual effects studio in Bangkok was used to shoot the ads entirely on the revolutionary RED camera, a high-performance digital cinema camera with the ability to match the look and quality of 35mm film and the convenience of pure digital imaging.
“Our client wanted to deliver the best visual experience possible, and with our world-class team and state-of-the-art equipment we were able to make it happen,” says Lelayuwa.
And the reason this technology is being ushered into the Southeast Asia film and special effects industry is simple: time is money.
The amount of time that can be saved using RED Camera technology in actual production and post-production is staggering. Even though the CineSky team had to find a suitable location in Bangkok that resembled an avenue and architecture in Cambodia’s Phnom Penh and fly recognizable models in from Cambodia for the actual shoot, all three 30-second TVCs took less than one month to produce.
CineSky was able to apply its knowledge of Pre-Visualization techniques to create the basic TVC in 3D animated format before any filming actually took place allowing the Director, Agency and Client to get a feel of the TVC before principal shooting – this allowed for a tighter film schedule with fewer days as many shots and sets were pre-approved, therefore saving time and money in the actual production process.
These groundbreaking techniques, used by Academy Award Winning Directors such as Steven Soderbergh and James Cameron, surpass traditional film workflows in regards to time, money and management.
“When using Digital Cinema Cameras over traditional film techniques there are a number of steps that are made obsolete,” says Tim Schultz, the lead online artist at CineSky. “There is no film processing, scanning and then transferring the images to tape before showing to client.
“Using Digital Cinema Cameras and their inherent workflow, we get full HD playback and the ability to color grade the footage on set which allows us to show the client the final look almost instantaneously – this gives the whole production an immediacy that you don’t get with the traditional 35mm workflow.
“This was particularly helpful as there were three separate commercials being shot at the same time. This allowed for a clean workflow that ensured all scenes had the footage that was needed for the final edits. All of this saves an incredible amount of time and money,” maintains Schultz.
Another bonus with using the Red Camera is that your post-production workflow is also greatly streamlined.
“CineSky went to Cambodia before shooting and cataloged a large number of reference photos of recognizable Cambodian locations. These were used throughout the TVCs to recreate the environments in a number of shots,” says Lelayuwa.
“CineSky uses a number of techniques that allows us to film the talent on Greenscreen and then used the photographic reference to recreate locations from Cambodia as well as creating a number of fully CG environments. It was CineSky’s ability to recreate these Cambodian locations that allowed us to film on location in Bangkok but still make the TVCs look and feel as if they had been filmed in Cambodia, which was an important part of the brief from the client and agency.”
“CineSky has positioned itself at the forefront of Red Camera technology in the region. It has the tools, and with its team of digital animation and film production specialists, it certainly has the talent,” says Kirk Bentham of TMD Communications, the creative agency managing the project.
“Our team comprises a mix of local and international specialists whose innovative planning, content creation and delivery consistently exceeds client expectations,” concludes Lelayuwa. “Smart Mobile was really impressed by the work we did and in the short amount of time that we did it in. In Asia, we are only seeing the beginning of what can be accomplished with the Red Camera.”
