On the Real Off the Record - with Chuck D
Legendary "Raptavist" Chuck D: We are living in times of weapons of mass distraction
Washington, DC, June 24, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Chuck D of Public Enemy speaks to TRNN Senior Editor in the latest installment of the On The Real, Off the Record video series on protecting oneself in the mass information age. "Mental self-defense means pay attention at all means," Chuck D says. "We don't carry bombs or force shields in our back pockets, so, you always have to be aware of your terrain."
He emphasizes that in an age of information, a person can easily be distracted from paying attention and recognizing the important issues while significant voices could also be lost amid the din of mass media. "We made our records to be the voice of the voiceless. To actually add some kind of courage, some kind of, no need to feel fear of anything. Definitely don't feel fearful of ignorance, and try to always say the right thing [even] in the face of being wrong, or things appearing wrong," Chuck D says.
Among the voices Chuck D hopes to support include those of Palestinian rappers. "The Palestinian rap movement has just been in the face of one-sidedness," he says. "The Israeli side has just had their agenda, and it's been supported by power structures that really kind of belittle anything in its path."
He offered to support the Palestinian rappers and "their voice to actually speak out. Because a voice speaking out against bombs is a big thing, it can actually prevent it, while the voices are loud enough to say, 'Hey, look at us.'"
"I' m a firm believer [in that] I don't believe people can't own the planet. I disagree with the facts that governments have of policy where they corral and control and they really segregate people by identifying them. So, I really have a hard time with any government policy saying 'This is our land, this is where we need to be.' I think the world should be for everybody. Even in that conflict, in that particular area, what smells is the powers that be, the bigger structures that smell money."
