Outskirts Press Author’s Children’s Book Is Sweet Lesson in Nutrition

Manhattan Beach, CA, June 22, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Children everywhere will want to take a bite out of “Cookie,” a delightful new children’s book that’s perfect for parents kick-starting a discussion with kids about nutrition.

Written by former schoolteacher Lisa Woomer and just released by Outskirts Press (www.outskirtspress.com), this beautiful, full-color book shows what happens when a little girl with a fondness for sweets goes a little overboard. The girl goes by “Cookie,” and for obvious reasons¾she eats them for breakfast, lunch, dinner and (of course) dessert. Meanwhile, despite her parents’ entreaties, healthy foods like broccoli, spaghetti and fish can’t get anywhere near Cookie’s plate.

Then something truly bizarre starts to happen. As Cookie eats more of her namesake food, her body starts to change in some very interesting ways, and it might just give new meaning to the phrase, “you are what you eat.” Through this strange twist of fate, Cookie learns she needs to start making better food choices.

Without being pedantic or preachy, “Cookie” manages to gently open the door to discussions about nutrition. That’s more important today than ever. Between 1980 and 2002, the number of overweight children ages 6 through 19 more than tripled, according to the Children’s Nutrition Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine. And studies show today’s junk-food-heavy diets don’t give kids enough of the nutrients they need.

Woomer was inspired to write “Cookie” after the birth of her first child, who turned out to be a very picky eater: “I realized that no matter how many times you try to get children to eat healthy foods, they still would rather eat cookies than broccoli,” she says.

Planting the message of eating well in a fun and humorous way can help change children’s attitudes toward food and result in healthy lifelong habits, says Woomer.

“As a former schoolteacher, I have always looked for books that not only entertained but had an educational message as well, and this book does just that,” states Woomer.

Cookie is now available through Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and the online bookstore of Outskirts Press, at outskirtspress.com/store.php.
