Pre-Employ.com Alerts HR Leaders to Dangers Facing Data Privacy at 2009 SHRM Conference
Leading Background Check and Employer Services Provider Pre-Employ.com Alerts Human Resources Leaders to the Dangers Offshoring, Repurposing, and Reselling Personal Information Pose to Data Privacy.
Anderson, CA, June 27, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Pre-Employ.com, a nationally recognized pre-employment background check and employer services provider, has announced it will alert Human Resources (HR) leaders to the dangers facing employee data privacy at the 2009 Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Annual Conference & Exposition in New Orleans, LA, from June 28 to June 30, 2009. The company will address the need for background check companies – as well as Applicant Tracking System (ATS) and Job Board System (JBS) providers – to ensure and secure the privacy and protection of the Personally Identifiable Information (PII) collected from employees during job posting, application, and screening processes.
Using the theme of “Why Would You?—How Could You?—How Dare You!” Pre-Employ.com hopes to educate HR leaders about the dangers of offshoring, repurposing, and reselling employee personal data. Pre-Employ.com – a company whose background check, ATS, and JBS privacy policy dictates that NO PII is to be resold, repurposed, or sent offshore – will offer a “Personal Employee Information Protection Certification” with questions about the data privacy policies of background check, ATS, and JBS providers:
* Have their background check, ATS, and JBS providers suffered any breaches in data privacy or data security involving PII in the last 5 years?
* Do their background check, ATS, and JBS providers “offshore” (send outside of the United States) PII to a foreign land beyond the jurisdiction of U.S. Privacy laws?
* Do their background check, ATS, and JBS providers “repurpose” (convert for use as another format or product) PII for other uses such as marketing purposes?
* Do their background check, ATS, and JBS providers resell PII to skip tracers, collection agencies, lawyers, or marketing lists?
* Do the parent companies or any subsidiaries of their background check, ATS, and JBS providers resell information for profit?
As reported by SHRM, more than 80 percent of businesses currently perform background checks where job applicants agree to give background check companies Personally Identifiable Information. This PII can include: Full Name, Date of Birth, Social Security Number (SSN), Driver’s License Number, Address, Employment History, and References – all the data needed to commit identity theft, which affected nearly 10 million Americans in 2008, according to the 2009 Identity Fraud Survey Report by Javelin Research.
While U.S. laws offer protection from identity theft, they mostly cease to exist once PII collected during background checks and by ATS and JBS applications is sent overseas to foreign call centers or processing locations with little to no standards for privacy. Even worse, U.S. citizens find it difficult to enforce their privacy rights overseas, since there are few practical and cost-effective ways to access foreign courts, contact foreign police, lodge complaints, or obtain assistance for identity theft.
To help HR leaders understand the importance of privacy, Pre-Employ.com will also offer a complimentary white paper – “Your Employee Data, How To Prevent Its Reselling and Offshoring” – at http://www.pre-employ.com/SHRM2009/Pre-Show/.
