NPSA Presents Affordable Housing Solutions at Design Event

Kansas City, MO, June 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry, recently presented portable storage containers as an affordable housing solution to students attending an event hosted by the Community Design Center of Atlanta.

"It was a honor to have the opportunity to help inspire these architecture students by demonstrating how flexible portable storage containers really are," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA. "The students who are undertaking this project could well become the next generation of affordable housing design experts."

The architecture students are designing low-income housing concepts using containerized storage. One design will be selected and presented to the City of Atlanta. The Community Design Center of Atlanta's goal is to build four low-income homes from containers. The NPSA was on hand to teach students how to conduct inspections for intermodal building units, discuss the role of professional trade associations, and display photos of container modifications NPSA members and architects have already completed.

The Community Design Center of Atlanta collaboratively provides responsive approaches to the needs of low-income neighborhoods through the application of planning, research and design skills. This technical assistance promotes social equity for low-income and minority groups through the development of programs and projects that local communities desire and are able to control the implementation thereof.

"This is just the beginning of the portable storage industry's participation in the quest for affordable housing," said Joel Rathbone, Operations Manager for the NPSA. "Companies like DwellBox and Container-It are already actively working to build homes out of portable storage containers. We look forward to continuing to educate the market on the possibilities."
