Proceeds from New Novel Benefit Literary Nonprofit

Author Thomas Nesbit Pledges 50% of Profits from DEEP FRIED to 826 National, a Nonprofit Organization that Helps Children Write and Publish

Las Vegas, NV, July 02, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Thomas Nesbit recently announced that half of all profits from his new novel DEEP FRIED will go to 826 National, a family of seven nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping students, ages 6-18, with expository and creative writing. This marks the first such pledge to the organization by a debut novelist. Nesbit’s offer has been enthusiastically received by 826 National CEO Nínive Calegari, Board Member Dave Eggers, and Development Director Lauren Hall.

“I’m deeply inspired by 826 National’s work,” said Thomas Nesbit, author of DEEP FRIED. “If you’re down over the current state of letters, you must check out what’s happening at the seven 826 organizations across the United States. It will change your point of view.”

826 National’s independent spirit encouraged Nesbit to release his first novel as a self-published eBook, despite interest from literary agents and industry professionals. The author’s experiences with publishing his first book - HENRY MILLER AND RELIGION (Routledge) - also encouraged him to avoid multinational media conglomerates. Nesbit believes that print publishing may suffer the same fate as the music industry in the age of file sharing and online communities.

“Most people get their information through an electronic screen rather than on paper,” said the author. “Today’s eBook technology allows people to carry an entire library on their iPhone, making it easier to enjoy books while riding the subway or waiting in line. Powerful search tools encourage new methods of scholarship and unparalleled accessibility to out-of-print books. You can even find software to transform eBooks into audiobooks.”

DEEP FRIED – a twisted coming-of-age comedy about a violin prodigy stuck in Roughedge County, North Carolina – currently retails for $2.99 at Smashwords, a digital publishing platform and online bookstore that puts authors in full control over the publishing, pricing, and marketing of their works. Nesbit hopes the low price will encourage people to try eBooks and discover an up-and-coming author. DEEP FRIED can be found at http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/2516

Thomas Nesbit holds a Ph.D. from Boston University and has received fellowships from Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM) and UCLA. Born in the American South, he currently lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. Find out more at thomasnesbit.com
