An inspiring and thought-provoking new book offers fresh, unique insight into the impact of the most historically significant election in U.S. history. Hope, Change and Obama: A Collection of Essays on an Historic Election (NLS Publishing, 2009) gives a voice to the generation of young people whose votes made a revolutionary statement heard around the world.

The book project began when author Norma LaVonne Smith sponsored an essay writing contest, asking high school seniors and college students to describe “what the election of Barack Obama, the first African-American President, means to you and your family.” Many of the stories submitted were so intriguing and thought-provoking that Smith felt they had to be published and shared. So, inspired by answers and insights from America’s young people, she compiled Hope, Change and Obama. The colorful and profound collection explores the impact of the election – for the essay writers, their families, their nation, and for the global community at large.

Reaching back through previous generations to share powerfully moving personal and family stories of oppression, struggle, hope, change, and triumph, the essay contributors discuss topics of racism, racial barriers, and their view of the possibility and potential of true equality for all.

“The book is dedicated to Barack Obama, the First Family, and all of civil rights leaders that made this moment in history possible,” explains Smith – who holds graduate degrees in business and law and is the current Director of Human Resources and Organizational Development for a community college in Texas. Because of her passion for education and her devotion to young people, a portion of the net proceeds from the sale of the book will help fund scholarships for college students across the USA.
