Regional Arts & Culture Council Awards $7,850 to MIKE Program for Mural Promoting Healthy Lifestyles

Portland, OR, July 10, 2009 --(PR.com)-- MIKE Program announces a $7,850 grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

The Multicultural Integrated Kidney Education (MIKE) Program will collaborate with the Portland Occupation Industrialization Center (POIC) to use the grant to fund a 100’ x 20’ mural on the west wall of the Diversified Services Institute (DSI) Northeast Portland Renal Center located at 703 NE Hancock in the Lloyd District.

The mural, lead by local artist, Robin Corbo, is intended to inspire youth to take preventive measures against kidney disease, while also serving as an outlet to educate the public at-large about the value of healthy lifestyle choices. As the MIKE Program, POIC and DSI serve people from multiple cultural backgrounds, the mural will be have a distinct international style and influence in order to appropriately represent their diverse population.

In addition to the RACC grant, several others will provide in-kind or financial donations to see the project to success. POIC has dedicated $10,000.00 in paid positions for 10 student internships as well as one case manager to serve as additional student support. DSI has dedicated $2,000.00 towards food and supplies to support the students. The African American Chamber of Commerce has offered a $200.00 grant to assist in funding the students’ paid internship as well.

The long wall of the DSI clinic, frequently tagged with graffiti, is expected to be complete by late August 2009. In addition to the efforts of the POIC students and Robin Corbo, the final mural painting will be the collective work of several additional volunteers as well as local businesses who have offered in-kind donations of supplies.
