A Killer’s Journal - New Book Explores a Unique Motive for Murder

Romulus, MI, July 12, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Matthew Carter’s new release, Liquid Soul, is a fascinating piece of dark fiction. Published by Outskirts Press, this book is told from the killer’s point of view. It’s the journal of a man with a secret, a man who travels along the path of other people’s souls at the mere touch of their life force—their blood. This is no ordinary killer, and his motives are quite unusual.

Forced to defend himself one night from a mugger, our narrator makes a fascinating discovery. By touching another human being’s blood, he is able to live for a short time as his victim did—experiencing their thoughts, remembering their past, and understanding their psyche. This “crimson exchange” quickly becomes an addiction, and the narrator finds himself looking for victims in order to experience their lives, however briefly. “In the blood sprouts something special, something real. More real than his life has been.” He needs to feel the flow of another’s blood over his hands to tap into their life force. Freeing people from the pain of their lives and searching through souls has become his obsession, something he hopes will lead him where he knows he belongs.

I don't have a past. I don't have a future. I just need Liquid Soul. It wasn't like this had been my first time, but it felt just as good and as pure. The addiction was something I just couldn’t help. It wasn’t alcohol or drugs, but instead it was feeling the crimson of my victims; most likely the only pure things left in them. I examined their souls and peered inside to see what experiences they’d had.

Despite all the experiences that are given to him, the narrator never knows the names of his victims, but he thinks of them as both his family and friends.

In my head I had certain ideas of what I needed to shake my core, and to keep the high going. But the more I got into it, the more I realized it was more than just the blood drug that gripped me; I soon became attached to the people themselves. Throughout my life I had wandered alone, trying to find pieces of me in any place I could and when it came down to it, I was nothing but a shell of missed opportunities. But when I saw others’ lives there was a glimmer of hope that resonated within.

Liquid Soul is 200 pages of voyeuristic delight, as the reader experiences each and every moment of the killer’s journey through other people’s lives. As Carter says, “Blood is the soul’s house, and the narrator has the key.”
