Pools Across the State Are Closing—Having Failed to Meet VGB Standards
Commercial Pool and Spa Owners are Hurt by Misinformation.
Dania Beach, FL, July 13, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Florida’s commercial pool owners have been getting visits from the County Health Department to see if they comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. These new safety standards took effect on December 19th, 2008.
The new federal act (VGB) requires that all public pools and spas—such as municipal pools, hotels, country clubs and day camps—install a compliant [ANSI/ASME 112.19.8-2007] drain cover. The Act allows for the closure of a non-compliant pool until the operator can successfully bring the facility into compliance.
Jim Gibson, the owner of Pool-X-Perts USA, a South Florida Pool Company, believes many commercial pool owners have not achieved compliance because of misinformation. He explains, “We had two customers who said their corporate offices were installing compliant drain covers. Unfortunately in both cases a noncompliant cover was installed. We’re working with them now to make sure they get the right product.”
According to the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, to determine if drain covers comply with the VGB Act, pool operators should answer yes to the following questions:
Is the cover marked with “VGB 2008,” “ASME/ANSI A112.19.8 2007,” or the swimmer logo? Or have qualified Field Fabricated Outlets been certified by a Registered Design Professional?
For single and dual outlet systems, is the flow rating for each cover equal to or greater than the Maximum System GPM?
Is the cover properly secured, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, to a manufactured sump or field-built sump design, and is the cover tested and certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory?
Pool-X-Perts USA has been proactive to ensure that their customers are well-informed regarding the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. Jim Gibson has worked closely with manufacturers to provide a drain cover that meets both federal and state regulations. They’ve been installing compliant covers for their customers and providing the required paperwork that must be submitted to the Health Department since approved covers became available in December 2008.
