NPSA Initiative Helps Take a Bite Out of Container Fraud
The National Portable Storage Association's STAR Database helps NPSA members protect themselves – and their customers – from container fraudsters.
Hallandale Beach, FL, July 17, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Container fraud takes many forms, from shippers attempting to evade high freight costs and custom duties by misrepresenting container contents to container vendors who take advanced payment for portable storage containers they never ship.
The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry, is tackling the second issue with its new STAR (Status, Trend, Alert Reporting) Database.
The STAR Database is a problem account database that helps members avoid scams, deadbeat vendors and other billing problems. It allows members to search for the names of companies to determine if other members have had fraud, money collection or other accounting problems with them in the past.
In the case of container fraud, the STAR Database takes reports of companies that purchase portable storage containers from vendors and never pay for them, as well as suppliers who collect money for portable storage containers from companies and never ship them.
"The STAR Database is helping protect our members in many ways. Of course, we rely on our members to submit the new entries concerning bankruptcies, collection payments, broken promises, past due payments and other issues," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA.
"If we work together as an industry, we can put an end to much of the container fraud we see in the today. This shared database will protect our members and their partners from predators who seek to earn a quick buck through a scam."
