"Journey of Hope: Children's Visions of Our Future" to Commemorate 25th Anniversary of Universal Peace Day
In this exhibition of international art, children share their visions for the world they hope will be waiting for them when they grow up. Young people speak of their desire for a peaceful environment, free from violence whether armed conflict, crime or domestic turmoil, while expressing their anxieties about war, nuclear armaments and environmental degradation.
New York, NY, July 22, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Others Are Us (OAU) is currently mounting digital and physical exhibitions of art for the 25th anniversary of Universal Peace Day (UPD) which takes place on August 5. UPD events are timed to coincide with the anniversaries of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki because, in addition to the general need for a safer, saner and more peaceful world for our children, there is an urgent need to rein in nuclear proliferation. Unfortunately things seem to be moving in the opposite direction with North Korea testing nuclear weapons and threatening to fire missiles at the US and with Iran seeking to develop nuclear capability that would threaten the safety of Israel and the Arab world. This is the moment to give Universal Peace Day a higher profile through the voices of our children and to step up youth leadership in mounting campaigns to raise awareness of the rights and plights of children everywhere.
OAU is partnering with several organizations on this exhibition, “Journey of Hope: Children’s Visions of Our Future”, as well as presenting children's art from past programs. We are particularly pleased by the participation of Orphans International World Wide, Fabretto Children’s Foundation and KidsCreative. Children naturally crave peaceful environments and violence of any kind--whether armed conflict, crime or domestic turmoil-- adversely impacts their well-being even when it touches them indirectly. Their art speaks strongly and poignantly to this desire for peace and safety and it is reflected in their hopes and dreams.
Since 2003, Others Are Us has been connecting children and youth from different countries, cultures and backgrounds through an in-depth exchange of art and written communications. We have worked extensively with young people in eight countries and are in the process of extending our geographic reach. OAU's goals are to build bridges of understanding and empathy between young people from different cultures and to advocate for children everywhere by demonstrating to adults how similar children are in the ways that matter most. Art has proven to be a powerful tool in advancing both these goals.
