St. Rose Hospital Cancer Program Earns National Recognition

Hayward, CA, July 23, 2009 --(PR.com)-- St. Rose Hospital Cancer Program has received a Certificate of Approval, with Commendation, from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. “Commendation” indicates that St. Rose excels in one or more of the Commission’s 36 evaluation standards.

Granted to healthcare facilities that demonstrate state-of-the-art services and equipment, this certification is only given to facilities already accredited by a recognized authority, such as The Joint Commission. Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer approved cancer program ensures that patients have access to a multi-specialty team approach to care and that the hospital has ongoing monitoring and quality improvement initiatives in place.

“We are very proud of this accomplishment, which demonstrates the hospital’s longstanding commitment to providing excellence in cancer care,” said Michael Mahoney, President and CEO of St. Rose Hospital. “It is fortunate that our patients have access to specialists and the highest level of expertise in cancer care, right here in our community,” adds Mahoney.

The Cancer Committee was established in 1987 to guide the cancer program at St. Rose. “The administration has been very supportive of the program and we have a dedicated Cancer Registry staff," states Dr. Ricardo Da Roza, St. Rose oncologist and Chair of Cancer Committee. He credits this achievement to the multi-disciplinary approach that gives best treatment options and information access to patients, adding "we have an excellent group of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and surgeons on staff who are active in the Cancer Committee and contribute to lively and interesting cancer discussions.”

Only 25 percent of hospitals in the United States have cancer programs that receive approval by the CoC. Once approved, certified cancer programs continue to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and performance review to ensure they conform to set standards.
