Technology Service Provider Goes Green – But its those Not Sharing Who Are Envious
Bizarc.com opens the debate on the environmental impact of SMB’s operating dedicated servers and extols the virtues of shared hosting.
London, United Kingdom, September 03, 2006 --(PR.com)-- Business Arc released today the first in a series of white papers on the environmental impact of SMB technology entitled “It feels good to share”. The paper addresses the growth in low cost server technologies and the environmental impact of increased energy usage amongst UK small to medium sized businesses.
The foundations of this debate first emerged in early 2000 when technology manufacturers and service providers jostled for position taking every opportunity to sway opinion in their favor. Many issues were raised over the security, risk and cost effectiveness of using third parties to run technology functions and even more on whether these applications could be ever shared between companies on the same server.
Five years later the argument has moved on as its generally accepted that hosted applications and shared services can and do work, now the question is do they have less of an impact on our environment?
UK based managed service provider BIZARC believes it makes a significant difference. The papers author, company Chairman and environmental evangelist Matt Gahan said “The new bread of Service Provider has to be stronger, more secure and fully accountable so in many ways a customers decision to outsource purely comes down to cost and personal preference. However, this is the easy bit to work out… With every technology decision there are always indirect costs and implications so the point behind our research was to highlight the environmental impact of small business expanding its energy footprint by making the decision to in-source. Servers aren’t like PC’s they are always on! With 84% of UK business classed as SMB’s it isn’t hard to see my point”
Matt concedes that as an MSP they would be more inclined to prove the argument in their favor but he insists this not the case “Cynic’s should just read it and then come back to me with alternative research. I live on this planet and I happen to disagree with destroying it for short term gain so ill leave you with this thought… Two thousand companies each running a web server 24x7, or companies like us running them all on one platform - which do you think would be greener?”
