The Claremont Center for Mathematical Sciences Awarded $341,000 from the Fletcher Jones Foundation
Claremont is home to some of the United States' top math researchers.
Claremont, CA, July 24, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Claremont Center for Mathematical Sciences (CCMS) was awarded $341,000 to establish the Fletcher Jones Fellowships in Mathematics for the Claremont Colleges.
Claremont Graduate University (CGU) is the lead school for the CCMS among the Claremont Colleges, which includes Pomona, Pitzer, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges, along with Keck Graduate Institute.
The CCMS was developed as an initiative to marshal the collective strengths of the mathematics programs across the consortium, benefiting the students at the colleges, providing cross-disciplinary research opportunities among the colleges’ math professors, and impacting the local community through its outreach activities.
The grant supports special fellowships for graduate and undergraduate students in mathematics to study and conduct research during eight-week intensive summer sessions which could possibly be extended into senior, year-long theses. Especially, it will enable the Center to pursue its important mission of promoting excellence in research and teaching in mathematics in the Claremont colleges and in area secondary schools.
“The announcement of the generous grant awarded to the Claremont Center for the Mathematical Sciences by the Fletcher Jones Foundation was a special moment for an impressive group of mathematics teachers and researchers in the Claremont Colleges,” said CGU Interim President Joseph Hough. “It is a clear indication of the emergence of the Claremont Center as one of the largest, most important, and widely recognized math centers in the country.”
John Angus, Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at CGU, agrees: “This grant from the Fletcher Jones Foundation is transformational in so many ways. The newly created Fletcher Jones Fellowships will engage talented students at an important time in their academic career and will encourage them to pursue graduate study in math-oriented fields. I salute the Foundation for helping to address this vital and pressing national need.”
CCMS interim Director Asuman Aksoy, Professor of Mathematics at Claremont McKenna College, elaborated further on the significance of the award: "What distinguishes our mathematical research center from others is our focus on vertically integrated research, which allows for increased collaboration between undergraduates, graduates, and professors. Our undegraduates, under the guidance and leadership of both our faculty and outstanding graduate students, are unusual in their extraordinary ability to conduct meaningful mathematical research. The Fletcher Jones fellowship allows us to further develop our unique approach to research, and will significantly contribute to CCMS."
