Michigan Jeweler Adopts Canine Diamond Detector
Rescued dog now has ability to sniff out real diamonds from fakes at prominent Pearlman's jewelry store.
Battle Creek, MI, July 26, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Bill Pearlman, owner of Pearlman's Jewelers in Battle Creek Michigan, got much more than he bargained for when he decided to adopt "Daisy Lou", a mixed breed dog from the local humane society.
Daisy had come from an abusive and neglectful environment and was overjoyed with her new found owner and friend. Daisy Lou immediately became a fixture at the Jewelry Store where she instinctively began to greet and entertain customers.
The real fun began one day as Mr. Pearlman and another Gemologist were examining a diamond ring that had been brought in as part of a consignment deal. Fairly certain that the diamond was a fake, Mr. Pearlman jokingly held it down to Daisy in his cupped hand. "What do you think of this, Daisy?" he asked. To his surprise, Daisy took a sniff and immediately begin to growl menacingly. "I think she knows it's a fake", said Mr. Pearlman laughing. To test the theory, Mr. Pearlman had a real diamond brought out of the vault. When this diamond was presented to Daisy for inspection her tail began to wag uncontrollably. The experiment was repeated several more times with the same result each time. Daisy always growled at the fake and wagged her tail at the genuine diamond. Needless to say Mr. Pearlman was quite impressed. "She has a 100% accuracy rating! Humans have to be trained to do this job. She just instinctively knows. When that tail starts wagging, we know she is looking at the genuine article."
How does she do it? Daisy Lou is keeping quiet about her amazing detective abilities. When asked which type of diamond smells the best, Daisy's only comment was "Ruff!"
