Clio Visualizing History Launches New Online Exhibit About Illustrated Histories

Visual images are viewed today as indispensable aids to the study of history, but this has not always been the case. By focusing on the production history of two major illustrated histories from the mid-nineteenth century (John Frost’s Pictorial History of the United States and Jesse Spencer’s History of the United States), this online exhibit suggests how visual images gradually became first acceptable, then desirable, and finally indispensable to historical thinking.

Shelburne, VT, July 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Clio Visualizing History, Skidmore College American Studies Professor Gregory M. Pfitzer, and Ecopixel have launched an interactive online exhibit that is focused on mid-nineteenth century illustrated histories at http://www.cliohistory.org. The exhibit is entitled “Picturing the Past: Illustrated Histories and the American Imagination, 1840-1900.”

Clio Visualizing History conceived and produced this innovative exhibit as part of their mandate to meet the growing need for history education projects in multimedia platforms. Founded in 1996 and based in Vermont, Clio is directed by historian Lola Van Wagenen.

The exhibit was researched and written by Gregory M. Pfitzer and is based on his book of the same title. Pfitzer is a professor in the American Studies Department at Skidmore College.

The exhibit brings more than 60 mid-nineteenth century images of illustrated history to the Internet – many available for the first time on the Web. Depictions include historical figures such as Pocahontas, George Washington, Columbus, DeSoto and more. Interactive graphics, magnified images and text illuminate the relationships among publishers, artists and historians in the making of illustrated histories.

Ecopixel, LLC of Vermont developed the online exhibit. Ecopixel delivers complete Web solutions by creating compelling content management system (CMS) Web sites, maximizing online visibility and search engine optimization (SEO), and offering green hosting.
