Journalist Quits 13-Year Career Based on Principles

ABC News confirms trend of people quitting their career despite recession.

Chicago, IL, July 31, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Jason Rodriguez knew that quitting his career during the worst recession this country has seen in decades would be a risky endeavor, but he took the plunge anyway.

“It was a matter of principle for me,” said the former reporter and part-time editor from Chicago. “I often asked myself, ‘How could I cover a business that was making large profits and cutting people while the company I was working for was doing the same?’”

So, Rodriguez, 31, joined the ranks of what ABC News deemed “The New Normal” in a report in June and quit his career to start a new venture in freelance writing and social media for small- and medium-sized businesses.

According to the ABC News report, newfound stress in the office is causing many people to consider alternatives to their old way of life, experts say. "A lot of people are saying, 'I don't want to sit here waiting for the shoe to drop,'" career expert Liz Ryan told ABC News.

Rodriguez was not amid those who were planned to be cut, but he volunteered anyway. When his bosses declined his offer, he knew the decision was up to him.

“In hindsight, the decision was pretty easy,” he said. “I look now at the colleagues I used to work with and they are overworked, overstressed and the morale is low. I’m glad I found the inner-entrepreneur I never knew I had.”
