SAAW International Launches Meat Free Monday

Currently a number of campaigns have sprung up aimed at persuading governments around the world to declare every Monday a meat free day in an effort to tackle climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Not only is meat production hugely carbon intensive but it is also responsible for 70% of the deforestation occurring in the Amazon rainforests, as trees are felled so that crops can be grown to feed livestock.

Taipei, Taiwan, October 25, 2009 --(PR.com)-- In recent headlines, the city of Ghent in Belgium has taken steps to reduce its carbon footprint and has made the brave decision to ask its citizens to go meatless one day a week.

According to a 2006 report by the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), entitled Livestock's Long Shadow: it stated that livestock production is responsible for 18 percent of all greenhouse gas (ghg)emissions which is more than all the cars, trains and planes combined.

Due to the impact that meat has on the environment, we need to reduce our consumption of this carbon intensive product as an effective solution to the climate change crisis.

It is for this reason that Society for the Advancement of Animal Wellbeing or SAAW International created a petition which calls for officials to take action now that will show Taiwan’s commitment to tackling Climate Change.

Please take time to sign the petition.
