"A Whale's Tale" chronicles the adventures of a juvenile humpback whale on his way from Hawaii to Alaska and back as told by his childhood sweetheart. The book includes twenty-eight detailed black and white illustrations by Ada, Oklahoma, artist and illustrator Ruth Janik provide coloring opportunities.
Janik, a former Alaska now Hawaii resident has written numerous award-winning books in a variety of genres under a variety pen-names.
"Books that adults and children can enjoy together are a passion of mine," says the outgoing physician-naturalist-educator turned writer. "'A Whale's Tale' was definitely a work of the heart. I was inspired to write it when my wife, Setsuko Tsuchiya, and I welcomed the humpback whales back to Hawaii last year at Christmas and sent them off with fond Aloha in mid-April. There are many reasons people visit the magnificent state of Hawaii, but greeting the whales every year when they return to Hawaii to bear their young is one of life's great thrills."
The second in his "Pacific Rim Naturalist" group of books for children, Janik continues his unique tradition of "talking up" rather than down to his readers, demonstrating in "A Whale's Tale" the power and beauty of narrative storytelling at its best.
"I emphasize the natural world, cooperation and humanistic ideals rather than conflict and violence in my children's books to awaken curiosity, discovery, and new ways of thinking about the world in both children and adults, at the same time opening the doors of literacy and the pleasure of lifelong learning to each new generation," says Janik.
An artist known for her vivid photographic renditions of nature, illustrator Ruth Janik says, "This is my first collaboration with a writer of children's books, a writer I greatly admire. Daniel (he's my son) told me he was searching for the right illustrator for what he said was his best book yet. When I read the story line, I realized it would be interesting to illustrate." Having lived in Alaska and Hawaii, Ruth, after traveling lesser known byways, settled near family and friends in Ada, Oklahoma where she continues to pursue her artistic endeavors.
