Back to the 1980s Party Cruise Celebrates the New Wave Music Era with "80s on the Waves"
California music promoter offers passengers a chance to party like its 1989. The cruise ship “Carnival Paradise” is set to stage a three day new wave themed revival cruise featuring 80s era bands, parties, dances and costume contest. Tributes to Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, The Cure and More.
San Diego, CA, August 07, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Leaving the docks of Long Beach, CA and embarking on a three night cruise to Ensenada, Mexico and back, the Carnival Paradise will not only be transporting it’s usual compliment of revelers and party goers, but also onboard the ship’s manifest will be an entire decade of good times and memories. The 80s on the Waves Cruise is scheduled to depart on Feb. 12th, 2010 and, like a ghost ship coming out of the fog, will arrive in the late 1980s just moments after the ship is underway.
“The 80s on the Wave aka New Wave Cruise will be a three day time travel experience into one of the most celebrated moments of our lives, or your parent’s lives if you are under 25”, said Michael Twombly from Music Zirconia Tributes who conceived of and is promoting the cruise. “ I thought of hosting this on a cruise ship so we’d be isolated away from everything current and be in our own little world”, he continued. “I wanted to capture a moment in time by creating a theme for the entire weekend with 80s bands, contest, adult proms and celebrity guests”.
The high point of the cruise will be the spectacular entertainment that is scheduled in the Paradise’s Grand Showroom. Music Zirconia Tributes has produced several exciting tribute shows showcasing four of the 1980’s top iconic new wave bands including: national touring acts “The Cured” (The Cure tribute), “Blasphemous Rumours” (Depeche Mode tribute) “Rio” (Duran Duran tribute) and special guest Gretchen Bonaduce of VH1’s Breaking Bonaduce and Reinventing Bonaduce fronting her 80s music band “ANKH”.
The entire weekend will be hosted by the iconic 80s new wave D.J. Richard Blade of the infamous Los Angeles radio station KROQ, which is widely credited for introducing new wave music to the United States. Richard Blade can currently be seen on VH-1 and hosts his own show on Sirius Satellite Radio’s 80s channel First Wave. Along with all of the tribute shows Richard will be hosting an 80s dance party on the main outdoor deck.
The timing of the 80s on the Waves Cruise is important, as well. The excursion is scheduled for Valentine’s weekend, 2010; departing on Feb. 12 and returning Monday morning Feb. 15th at 8:00am. The cruise was conceived with both couples and singles in mind. The event planners are making sure there are plenty of romantic activities for the couples, as well as a variety of events designed as singles mixers. Also of note; the cruise is All Ages with many parts of the ship designed with kids in mind.
“We planned this trip to be affordable and economical as well. All food and entertainment on board is included in the ticket price which starts at only $305 for the entire cruise”, said Twombly. The Carnival Paradise will have a day stop for shopping and site-seeing in the beautiful port city of Ensenada, Mexico then back out for a night of fun at sea.
The 1980s is considered by many to be the most ‘colorful” time in modern history. There are those from the 1960s who may dispute this, but there is no denying the influence of MTV (who believe it or not- played music videos at the time) and a generation of young adults who descended upon the shopping malls and nightclubs of America dressed in loud and florescent clothing, complete with vibrant make-up and Aquanet sculptured hairdos.
Movies such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Valley Girl and John Hughes era defining classics including Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club and 16 Candles provided both the soundtrack and the template for fashion of what we now remember as the new wave era.
As with most genres of music such as 50s, 60’s or 70’s disco there is often a resurgence in popularity many years after the original airplay date. The 80s new wave phenomenon is no exception. The “second coming” of new wave has sparked thousands of “80s nights” at nightclubs across the USA. Many of the musical acts that shaped the infamous decade have resurfaced in various forms to capitalize on the opportunity by participating in tours, festival, TV shows and large sold out concerts.
“The 80s on the Waves Cruise will be a reunion of sorts. While you may not find old classmates on board, you will be able to reconnect with one of the most vibrant times of your youth” explains Michael. “If you were lucky enough to have experienced the 1980s and want to relive that period in time or if you were born too late and would like to experience a taste of it firsthand then this event is not to be missed”.
