Local Grillers Sought for BBQ Competition Norwalk Exchange Club to Debut Bar·B·Q Pit at Norwalk Seaport Association Oyster Festival in September

Norwalk, CT, August 08, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Bar·B·Q Pit at the Norwalk Seaport Association Oyster Festival will breathe smoking hot flavor and excitement into a longstanding local tradition. Created by the Norwalk Exchange Club as a new draw to the 32-year-festival, The Bar·B·Q Pit promises to pair the lure of fire-roasted cooking with good, old-fashioned competition.

The three-day event – occurring Sept. 11-13 at Veteran’s Park -- will include amateur and professional cooking competitions, tasting opportunities, cooking/grilling/smoking demonstrations, on-site vendors of barbeque, BBQ-related products and live entertainment.

Local grillers are urged to join in on the fun. “The competition includes an opportunity to become Norwalk’s ‘King of the Grill,’” says Greg Bernson, chairman of the Bar·B·Q Pit .

The “Thrill of the Grill" – an amateur cooking competition – will be held Sept. 12. Local entrants are welcome to enter competitions for grilled chicken breast, seafood, pork chop and burgers. Professional grillers will judge the competition and an award will be presented to a winner in each category. For more information and applications, go to www.NorwalkBBQ.com.

The competitive spirit will be the backbone of this tribute to the great American pastime. In all, more than $20,000 in prizes will be awarded throughout the daily competitions.

Celebrity barbecue expert Jack MacDavid, from the Food Network’s “Grillin’ & Chillin’ with Bobby Flay” will be both competing and vending his world famous ribs.

In addition to the “Thrill of the Grill” amateur contest, Professional competitions (just like on the Food Network) take place Saturday Sept. 12 with a grilling competition sanctioned by the New England Barbeque Society. The categories are chicken breast, pork chop, burger and seafood. Sunday, Sept. 13 is a traditional low & slow barbecue contest sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society featuring chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. Over $20,000 in cash prizes will be awarded over the 3 days.

For those looking to sample barbecue fare, the competition will include three People’s Choice competitions. A Wings Competition takes place Friday, a Whole Hog competition and a Chowder Cook-Off take place on Saturday. People can sample items entered in each contest and vote on the foods they like best,” explains Bernson.

“There are now more than 500 barbecue cook offs in the United States, yet few occur in Fairfield County,” he points out. “Championship Barbecue and Barbecue festivals are fast becoming one of the most popular events held in North America. These events create an atmosphere of fun and great eating.

“This great American cooking tradition has grown to have an extensive following, which we hope to capitalize on,” he adds. “The Exchange Club will use the profits toward our continued efforts in combating child abuse and community service ”

The community is urged to attend the event and interact with the contestants. “This is an opportunity to get grilling and barbeque tips from professionals,” says Bernson. “You can also pick your favorites and cheer them on.”

Additional competitions during the event will include an Iron Chef challenge on Sept. 11, a barbecue sauce competition on Sept. 12 and a Spirit Competition on Sept. 13 that recognizes the cooking site with the most patriotic theme.

The deadline for professional and amateurs to sign on for the competitive events is Aug. 31.
