Buffalo Thunder Resort Named 2009 Project of the Year
American Subcontractors Association of New Mexico recognizes Balfour Beatty Construction project with prestigious award
Dallas, TX, August 06, 2009 --(PR.com)-- In an award ceremony held on Friday, July 24, 2009, the New Mexico Chapter of the American Subcontractors Association (ASA-NM) named Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino as Project of the Year for 2009.
Doug Jones, Division CEO of Balfour Beatty Construction, says, “We are truly honored by the recognition this award provides to the project team, the architectural team of Thalden-Boyd-Emery Architects, our subcontractor partners, and the owners of Buffalo Thunder Resort – all of whom worked so closely together to ensure the project’s success.” Balfour Beatty Construction served as construction manager for the $280 million resort.
Criteria for the ASA-NM Project of the Year award included the impact of the project on community, innovative design and construction techniques, and the teamwork exemplified among general contractor, owner, subcontractors and architect/engineers.
“We accept this award in recognition of the incredible team that was instrumental in getting the project done top-notch, three months early and on budget,” says Rick Dumiak, Executive Director of Facilities for the Pueblo of Pojoaque, who accepted the award on the behalf of the entire project team.
Seven other major New Mexico projects were nominated for the award including the Thornburg Campus, Fidelity Investments Corp., Schott Solar, UNM Centennial Engineering Center, Volcano Vista High School - Phase 1, and Mesa Del Sol Town Center.
The sheer size of the Buffalo Thunder project, which is a Hilton property, is a huge accomplishment in itself, making it the largest resort in the state of New Mexico at 700,000 square feet. The Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino used between 600 and 800 local laborers on the project, and has hired hundreds of New Mexicans for quality jobs in the entertainment, hospitality, and service industries.
Designed as a four-star destination incorporating traditional Pueblo architectural and design elements, the resort features luxury amenities, including a 16,000-square-foot luxury spa and fitness facility, restaurants, entertainment venues, meeting space, and an upscale casino. As a new addition to an already established golf course and hotel, construction was scheduled in and around this operating facility without disruption to guests and workers.
