Large Numbers of Working Mums Seek Retraining

Large numbers of mums are considering retraining as a way round the recession or to get back into work, according to a recent poll by jobs and community site Workingmums.co.uk.

London, United Kingdom, August 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Large numbers of mums are considering retraining as a way round the recession or to get back into work, according to a recent poll by jobs and community site Workingmums.co.uk.

It found that 59% of the over 230 people polled were considering retraining, but had not yet fully committed to it. Thirty per cent were actively seeking some form of retraining and only 5% had not considered it.

Some mothers said they were doing degrees to get out of low-paid or unchallenging jobs. But others said they were not confident of leaving their job in the current climate, even though they felt hemmed in by it. One said: "I'm considering retraining, but no really doing anything about it - I don't fully know why.....I'm working full time in an OK job - no scope for progression though, feel a bit stuck, I don't want to risk my current job by starting somewhere new. Think I'm just a bit scared."

Gillian Nissim, founder of workingmums.co.uk, said: "The interest in retraining that the poll shows backs up other data we have gathered at workingmums. Often after having children, women reconsider the kind of job they want to do - their motivations and priorities may change and they also may find that they build more skills as parents which they want to use in the workplace. Having greater flexibility in their work also becomes more of an issue and many are willing to change career in order to achieve this. Becoming a parent is a time of great change and new possibilities for women. Many of the women who register at workingmums have a wide range of experience in their current jobs and a lot to offer to future employers in a wide range of fields."
