Part-Time FD from Orchard Growth Champions Growth Businesses at Surrey Chamber of Commerce Meeting with Vince Cable

The MP for Twickenham, who has developed a reputation as the politician that spotted what was happening in the UK economy before anybody else, was in Guildford for an evening event and had taken the opportunity to hear first hand how the Surrey economy was coping with the current downturn. Points raised by the Chamber members present included job preservation, regulation and planning laws. Mr Cable said that the latter had been eased recently although he was not convinced that it would have the desired effect of precipitating the sustainable public works programme that he felt would provide both social benefits and jobs. He was very conscious that job security was a pre-requisite for economic recovery but warned that there were no easy answers.

Louise Punter, Chief Executive of the Surrey Chamber, chaired the meeting, and said that while the business climate was not easy in the county, a number of businesses were doing well. However they were almost apologetic about the fact as if they shouldn't be. Mr Cable said that he was pleased to hear some good news in this respect but cautioned that this was not his experience from elsewhere in the country. "While businesses were doing their best to move the country out of recession, politicians needed to play their part in supporting and encouraging them," commented Antony Doggwiler after the meeting.
