Psychological First Aid: An Adaptation for Communities
Thousand Waves Features Anne Parry of Chicago’s Office of Violence Prevention for Upcoming Meditations on Activism Presentation.
Chicago, IL, August 20, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Thousand Waves Martial Arts & Self-Defense Center, NFP, will feature Anne Parry – the Director of Chicago’s Office of Violence Prevention – as guest speaker for its upcoming Meditations on Activism presentation, taking place September 19 and titled, “Psychological First Aid: An Adaptation for Communities.” The event will focus on the various tools adults can use to provide immediate psychological help to children following a potentially traumatic event.
“We think all adults that live in community with children, especially parents and teachers, should know these positive, pro-active healing responses in order to help children who have been exposed to violence,” says Marie O’Brien, Director of Violence Prevention Programs at Thousand Waves. Parry agrees, “Just as we know what to do when someone is choking or bleeding, we should also know how to apply first aid for people’s spirits and emotional hurt.”
The interactive presentation will have participants apply the 7 Core Psychological First Aid (PFA) Actions to real community situations they might encounter through discussion, role-play and team exercises. The presentation itself is based on the PFA Field Manual designed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and the efforts of Dr. Robert Pynoos and others. This event is free and open to the public, and childcare will be provided.
Parry has developed community education programs on violence prevention topics such as Stress and Violence, authored books and articles addressing bullying prevention and choosing non-violence, and developed the violence prevention campaign known as TAKE TEN! Talk It Out! Walk It Out! Wait It Out! A recipient of several awards throughout her 27-year career, Parry has been named as one of Today’s Chicago Woman’s 100 Women Making a Difference.
When: Saturday, September 19, 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Where: Thousand Waves Martial Arts & Self Defense Center
