About the Book (Excerpts & Info)

Fourteen-year-old Nate Thompson has just survived one trauma - the loss of his family in a tragic plane crash. But now his aunt and uncle want to adopt him, and he undergoes a second upheaval as he moves from the New Jersey suburbs to a farm in northwestern Pennsylvania. Nate expects life in rural Woodson to be dull. But the farm turns out to be a mile down the road from Forest State Hospital, a state-run mental institution - and attached to this operational facility is an old, closed, and forbidding sanitarium called Stonewood. His aunt and uncle tell Nate to stay away from the place. But he is inexorably drawn to it, and from the beginning he senses something isn't right. Eluding the facility's terrifying security guard, Nate gains access to the sanitarium's locked basement through a hidden dumbwaiter. There he learns that a black-market ring is operating out of the old hospital, and its leader is someone he never would have expected. Eavesdropping on a conversation between some of the goons, Nate discovers that the gang is trafficking in three commodities -- and shipments are scheduled to arrive the following weekend. Hiding inside the hospital's duct work, Nate is able to get a bird's-eye view of the whole operation. Some of the items are stored in the warehouse, others in the cooler, and the rest in holding cells below the sanitarium's basement. Nate plans a rescue attempt but is caught. The ring's sadistic leader decides to eliminate all signs of our young hero. Read on to see if Nate escapes or perishes in his quest for justice.
