"Few photographers have ever seen a polo match, let alone had a chance to shoot one. We jumped at the opportunity to offer our photo students something so different," Nowell said. "Previous workshops have centered on high profile cycling, soccer and pro hockey but polo was something completely new for our students"
Nowell partnered with the Augusta Polo Club based in Eastern Ontario as official photographers for the Peanut Polo Cup, an annual fundraising event for equine and canine rescue. Students receive media access to the event and work with Nowell to make sure they get the total professional experience.
For regular photo student, Cheryl Kreis, the opportunity to shoot such an unusual event was too good to pass up: "It is such a thrill to have press-pass vantage points," says Kreis. "Shooting sports events with Harry gives you opportunities you could never arrange on your own."
The workshop mirrors the experience of a working sports photographer, from preparing the shoot to taking the photos and filing opportunities with news outlets. Students learn best techniques for shooting high-speed events, how to manage equipment and how to shoot under pressure.
The workshop which runs August 29-30 and September 2nd includes sessions before and after the match to ensure students maximize their experience.
"Learning by doing is our philosophy," Nowell says. "Classroom courses can never prepare you for the reality of being in the field with your adrenaline rushing and a deadline looming. That's when you get the real idea of what it's like to work as a sports photographer. Our workshops give that experience, in a supportive, instructive way."
