Lone Star College System Implements EQUELLA to Power Content Discovery
Cambridge, MA, August 26, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Learning Edge North America, today announced that the Lone Star College System has selected its award-winning digital repository EQUELLA to power content discovery at the institution.
The Lone Star College System is one of the largest and fastest growing community college districts in Texas with an enrollment of over 51,000 students and approximately 2,500 instructional faculty. It is comprised of five campuses, six satellite centers, and a university center. Located in the North Houston metropolitan area, Lone Star College System has a service area that covers 1,400 square miles of Harris County, Montgomery County, and surrounding communities.
Lone Star’s overriding goal for this project is to empower its faculty to connect with and develop new learning communities throughout the world. The “Lone Star Fusion Digital Repository,” as the system will be called, will streamline and simplify the discovery of high quality content with a curriculum-based approach. It will connect Lone Star College teaching faculty with content from other premier learning object repositories world-wide. Moreover, it will enable them to share and showcase their own work with both internal and external colleagues at their own discretion.
“In a discernible format, we wish to bring the World’s content to our faculty, staff, and students,” said William Durham, Associate Vice Chancellor for Distance Learning. “Utilizing EQUELLA, we hope to enable users to discover, reuse, and repurpose the best content available that is both rigorous and relevant to their specific subject areas.”
Furthermore, Lone Star College’s aim is to become a new provider of content and literacies for other institutions globally. Key to this aim is the need to implement a system that is open, especially in the area of standards support to improve interoperability and platform independence.
“The decision to implement EQUELLA was easy, due to its interoperable nature,” said Chris Turek, Director of Innovation, Lone Star College System. “We wanted a solution that embraced open standards, such as OAI PHM harvesting, and IMS/SCORM packaging. Amongst others, support for these standards ensures compatibility with other institutional systems and enables open sharing of content with other repositories.”
“Lone Star Fusion perfectly encapsulates our philosophy of Content as a Platform,” said Bob Cupitt, Chief Executive Officer, The Learning Edge North America. “We look forward to equipping the Lone Star College System with the tools to create a world-class system for content discovery.”
Lone Star will undertake the implementation of EQUELLA over the coming months, targeting availability to faculty staff and students in the Fall.
