Biocontainment Facility Design and Construction Administration Completed by FSG
Chicago, IL, August 27, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Facilities Solutions Group completes design and construction administration of Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL-3) biocontainment facility in Chicago. As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ABSL-3 involves practices suitable for work with animals infected with indigenous or exotic agents that present the potential of aerosol transmission and of causing serious or potentially lethal disease.
The project scope included two ABSL-3 suites that house research for Yersinia pestis, the infectious agent responsible for the plague, and certain mycobacteria, the infectious agents responsible for tuberculosis. The strains of the plague are regulated select agents under the authority of the CDC.
The project included renovation work in a 20-story structure built in 1926 and an adjoining seven story structure built in 1955. A new bio-exhaust system was installed from the third floor up to a 17th floor mechanical room and included a continuous use bag-in / bag-out HEPA housing unit and filters. The HVAC system included redundant fans, bubble-tight dampers on both the supply and exhaust, and an emergency generator.
Facilities Solutions Group responsibilities included program management, lab planning, architecture, and engineering. Total project cost was $3 million.
