Kultur announces the DVD release of the Vera Stroyeva film production of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov. The DVD will be available on September 29, 2009 for a suggested retail price of $29.99.

This 1954 film adaptation of Boris Godunov is one of the most successful of Russian operatic films. It deftly streamlines the story of the Russian Czar whose regime and life are threatened by the False Dmitri, a pretender to the throne. Director Vera Stroyeva’s approach to the opera is distinctly cinematic. Her atmospheric handling of the crowd scenes, juxtaposed with startling close-ups, reminiscent of the work of her celebrated predecessor Sergei Eisenstein.

In this production the famed Russian Bass Alexander Pirogov dominates this production as Boris Godunov accompanied by the Chorus, Ballet and Orchestra of the Bolshoi theatre conducted by Vassily Nebolsin.
