Gregg Skill's Royal Engagement
American woodcrafter Gregg Skill has revealed his most unusual commission, which he accepted for the wedding of the Prince of Wales to Camilla Parker Bowles.
Dallas, TX, June 22, 2005 --(PR.com)-- American woodcrafter Gregg Skill has spoken for the first time about the unusual commission he accepted for the wedding of the Prince of Wales to Camilla Parker Bowles.
"I received a phone call towards the end of March from a gentleman in London," says Gregg, "who wanted to order one of my Georgian Planters as a gift for the couple".
I got the impression that the guy was an avid fan of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and not too impressed with her former husband's choice of bride," he added.
While Gregg was given "free rein" with the decorative elements (a cactus and lasso), the customer insisted on just three words – Camilla Parker's Bowl – for the inscription. Bizarrely, the client requested that the planter should be dressed as a horse trough before being shipped to England...complete with a good supply of Texas hay!
"I'd seen a few Royal parodies and heard plenty of jokes leading up to the wedding – on SNL and Jay Leno, for example – so I saw the funny side of this and fully understood the implications."
I don't know how the gift was received at the Palace," says Gregg, "but the guy sent a photograph, which gave us a good laugh".
Coincidentally, Gregg Skill's royal commission came in the same month that a team of French and American researchers successfully cloned a horse at Texas A&M University. The foal was named Paris Texas.
