Consumers’ Faith in Economy Flagging

Baltimore, MD, September 01, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Nearly one third of consumers feel pessimistic about the security of their income six months from now, according to a survey by Baltimore, MD-based marketing research firm Jacobs Jenner & Kent. That’s an increase from one fifth of consumers six months ago, the survey indicates.

“While consumers showed reserved optimism about household income during the first two quarters of the year, their negative feelings have now surmounted any positive ones,” says Wayne Jacobs, president.

The nationwide survey, conducted quarterly via the Internet, measures beliefs about current and future business conditions among heads of households in major metropolitan areas.

The survey also shows a measurable increase in worry about business prospects in the US during the next six months. More than 40 percent of consumers now feel those prospects are poor, compared to only 27 percent six months ago.

More than half of consumers now also believe that future employment looks grim, according to the survey. That’s up from one fifth six months ago.

“Despite recent improvements in the equity markets and many national indices, when it comes to business conditions, employment and income in the near term, heads of American households basically don’t find much to celebrate,” says Jacobs.
