SIP Forum’s Fax-over-IP Interoperability Task Group Reaches Important Milestone
Publishes Formal FoIP Problem Statement v.1.0
Los Angeles, CA, September 02, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The SIP Forum has announced today that the IP communications association’s Fax-over-IP Interoperability Task Group has published its formal FoIP Problem statement – and in the process reached an important milestone for its FoIP initiative.
The SIP Forum chartered the FoIP Interoperability Task Group to investigate interoperability issues with the deployment of fax services, specifically ITU-T T.38, in SIP networks. The issues surrounding IP-based fax and the use of T.38 make it difficult for users to determine if T.38 can or will work reliably and thus offer an alternative to traditional TDM-based fax transport.
While the T.38 protocol, approved by the ITU-T in 1998, was designed to allow fax machines and computer-based fax to carry forward in a transitioning communications infrastructure of both IP- and TDM-based telephony, today there are enough problems and confusion among vendors, enterprises, and service providers to significantly slow the use of IP as a real-time fax transport.
“It is clear that Fax is still important to businesses and to business process work flow, and that incompatibility between FoIP implementations have in many cases slowed VoIP adoption due to the continued demand for reliable fax capabilities,” said Eric Burger, SIP Forum Chairman of the Board. “This important effort will help promote the adoption of SIP and VoIP in the broader business community.”
The FoIP Task Group Problem Statement details the problems the task group has chosen to address. Some of the issues the SIP Forum’s FoIP effort will deal with include:
· Interoperability failures seen in the field or lab
· Reliability or quality issues seen in the field or lab
· Deployment experiences
· Development experiences
· Architectural principals
· Proposals for achieving a higher degree of FoIP interoperability and/or FoIP reliability
· Proposals for soliciting additional real-world feedback from implementers and service providers
"A key goal of the SIP Forum FoIP effort is to bring together researchers, engineers, equipment vendors and service providers to exchange ideas, share experiences, and propose approaches to address FoIP technology issues and problems. Of course, a key focus is on the use and applicability of SIP to address systemic or architectural problems,” said Marc Robins, SIP Forum President and Managing Director. "In addition, if the initiative identifies concrete proposals to improve FoIP that would require modifications to the underlying protocols, the Forum will forward these proposals to the appropriate groups in the standards bodies, including the IETF, IEEE, or ITU-T.”
"It is only through the efforts of the group as a whole that we have reached this important milestone," said Neil Weldon, Director of Technology, CTO Office, Dialogic Corporation, who serves as the FoIP Task Group Chair. "We now turn our efforts into addressing these problems to improve the overall FoIP environment for all across the industry and we are open to new interested parties getting involved in these efforts."
The FoIP Task Group leadership includes Neil Weldon; Max Schroeder, Sr. VP. Faxcore, who serves as the Task Group Whip; and document editors including Mike Coffee, CEO/COB, Commetrex Corporation; Michael Chen, LSI Corporation; Kevin P. Fleming, Director of Software Technologies, Digium, Inc; and Mike Oliszewski, CTO, FaxBack, Inc.
Active FoIP Task Group participants include representatives from companies including Alcatel-Lucent, AEMcom, AT&T, AudioCodes, Biscom, Dialogic Corporation, Digium Inc., C4U Solutions, Cisco Systems, Inc., Commetrex Corporation, Comunycarse, DevFoundry Software, emFAST, Faxback Inc, Faxcore, Lexmark, LSI Corporation, NeuStar Inc,, Nortel, Omnitor, Orange, Packetizer, Sagem-Interstar Inc., Siemens Enterprise Communications Group, Sonus Networks, and Teridian Semiconductor Corp.
SIP Forum participation includes Eric Burger, Chairman of the Board, SIP Forum; Marc Robins, Managing Director and President, SIP Forum; and Richard Shockey, Chair of the Technical Working Group.
About The SIP Forum
The SIP Forum is an IP communications industry association that engages in numerous activities that promote and advance SIP-based technology, such as the development of industry recommendations, the SIPit interoperability and testing events, special interoperability workshops, educational seminars, and general promotion of SIP in the industry. One of the Forum's notable technical activities is the development of the SIPconnect Technical Recommendation -- a standards-based recommendation that provides detailed guidelines for direct IP peering and interoperability between IP PBXs and VoIP service provider networks. The SIPconnect Compliant Certification Program is an associated program through which eligible companies can gain SIPconnect validation and the right to license the use of the SIP Forum's 'SIPconnect Compliant' certification mark -- the official brand of the leading standard for SIP Trunking products and services.
