Getting Divorced at 55? You're Not Alone.
One Journey Consulting, a coaching practice dedicated to personal renewal through life transitions, sees trend in individuals attending their weekly supportive workshops- most are women in their mid 50s.
Wayland, MA, September 05, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Turning fifty is a milestone for most women. It often begins a new phase of life- a time of personal renewal and rediscovery. The focus is no longer so intensely on parenting or career development, but on getting back in tune with one’s self and mate. Unfortunately, and ironically, this decade of life also seems to be the time of divorce.
One Journey Consulting, a coaching and consulting practice in Wayland dedicated to helping individuals through the journey of divorce, has born witness to this occurrence: most of the attendees of the Journey of Divorce Base Camp (a six-week workshop for those separated or newly divorced) are women in their fifties (with the second largest group in their early sixties).
Renee Cooper, coach and co-founder of the practice, noticed the trend two years into her coaching practice. “Several forces are at work during this stage in a person’s life,” says Cooper. “Parents in their fifties often experience ‘empty-nesting’. Focus and energy tends to shift away from the parental role, and the spousal relationship takes on more significance. Many marriages come apart under the increased scrutiny and together-time. Also, couples who have stayed in the marriage for the children now feel freer to separate. Most women and men also experience some degree of re-evaluation during this time, and many marriages (and careers) are fatalities of that mid-life review.
The Journey of Divorce Base Camp reconvenes on Wednesday, September 23 for six weeks and Ms. Cooper won’t spend too much time worrying about whether the new group fits the typical demographic. Instead, she will focus her energy on helping members gain mastery over the emotional roller-coaster and move forward in their healing process. Because it doesn’t really matter what age divorce enters your life, it matter what you do with your life afterward.
