August Showers Blight 67% of UK Summer Holidays

As ‘staycations’ become increasingly popular, holidaymakers are urged to plan ahead to get the best from their destination. 1st September marks start of UK-wide Try Dive Month.

Liverpool, United Kingdom, September 05, 2009 --(PR.com)-- With 13% more of the UK population holidaying in this country during 2009**, research carried out by the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC)* has shown that many breaks simply didn’t live up to expectations.

Aside from the obvious weather gripes – 67% said that the weather ruined their plans - a quarter of staycationers (25%) moaned that their domestic jaunts didn’t match that of going abroad and 8% complained that their holiday wasn’t active enough.

However, as a firm fan of the 7,500 mile UK-coastline, BSAC is urging holiday-makers to rethink their approach to traditional summer holidays and to plan an escape that doesn’t need sunshine to guarantee a good time.

BSAC suggests that diving in the UK, which opens up some of the world’s most dramatic and enticing underwater environments, is a great alternative to drizzly beach holidays.

With National Try Dive month beginning tomorrow, it’s an ideal opportunity to discover the world of scuba in the safe confines of a local swimming pool, for just £10.

Mary Tetley, BSAC Chief Executive said: “As a nation we often hanker after the benefits of a holiday abroad and are then disappointed when our UK breaks are blighted by rain and wind. Yet, if we plan activities for wet weather, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to make the most of every day of our hard-earned break.

“While some people mistakenly think it is difficult to get into, one such activity is scuba diving. Learning to dive with BSAC is an easy and ideal way to start. We have more than 1,100 diving clubs around the country, with members aged 12-80. Not only is it fantastic fun for the whole family but it also adds a whole new dimension to holidaying – what better way to escape the grey skies than by exploring the underwater world that’s on offer!”
