World Suicide Prevention Day Events Show Global and Local Activity
A wide range of groups from around the world have been submitting their planned activities for World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th, to the International Association for Suicide Prevention and they show creativity and purpose.
Montreal, Canada, September 06, 2009 --(PR.com)-- September 10th, 2009, is World Suicide Prevention Day, organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).
The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day in 2009 is “Suicide Prevention in Different Cultures”. The Day will be launched at the Press Conference of the United Nations on September 10th at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where the President of IASP, Professor Brian Mishara, and WHO representatives will announce the latest figures on suicide worldwide as well as suicide prevention activities.
This is only one event marking World Suicide Prevention Day. From Australia to Canada, Romania to South Africa, The Cook Islands to Bangladesh and India to Namibia and more, events including thousands of participants will include conferences, meetings, concerts and activities with spiritual or cultural content. The aim is to develop awareness of suicide as a major preventable cause of premature death. These events will also enhance understanding about suicide, and publicize progress and programs for effective suicide prevention.
Further information can be found on the IASP website at: www.iasp.info/wspd/
The International Association for Suicide Prevention was founded in Vienna (1960) as a fellowship of researchers, clinicians, practitioners, volunteers and national and local organizations. IASP, in official relations with the WHO, believes that suicide prevention should be given greater priority at global, national, and local levels incorporating research that has shown suicide is preventable.
