GreenLight to Represent Personality Rights of Bruce Lee
GreenLight’s Celebrity-Estate Representation Experts to Help Enhance Lee’s Legacy and Manage Licensing Opportunities
Los Angeles, CA, September 10, 2009 --(PR.com)-- GreenLight (www.greenlightrights.com), a global media licensing, talent negotiation and rights representation consultancy, today announced that it has been selected to represent the personality rights of Bruce Lee, the most influential martial artist of the 20th century who popularized the art form around the world.
GreenLight has been named the exclusive third-party licensor to Lee’s personality rights - including his name, image, likeness, signatures and characterizations for use in advertising and promotions.
“Bruce Lee took martial arts to a new level of popularity and inspired generations of people to be interested in kung fu,” said David Reeder, Vice President of GreenLight. “While he is best known for his lightning-fast moves and unstoppable punches, he was considerably more, including a recognized philosopher and an enduring symbol of Chinese national pride. It is the entirety of what Bruce Lee stood for that we hope to share.”
Lee, who made only a handful of kung fu movies in his abbreviated career, is considered to be the greatest icon of martial arts, starring in hits including Enter the Dragon, The Way of the Dragon, Fist of Fury, The Big Boss and Game of Death. Lee not only starred in The Way of the Dragon, but directed and produced it as well. Lee was named to Time magazine's “100 Most Important People of the Century” as one of the greatest heroes and icons, was recognized as one of People magazine and VH1’s “200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons,” as well as being one of Variety magazine’s “Icons of the Century” in 2005. Lee died of a cerebral edema caused by an allergic reaction to pain medication in 1973 at the age of 32.
“Bruce paved the way for the martial arts film genre to penetrate and influence mainstream Western cinema and audiences,” said Alex Stephens, Vice President of Licensing at Bruce Lee Enterprises. “Bruce enjoyed remarkable success, and we are proud to continue highlighting his artistic achievements through our relationship with GreenLight.”
Lee continues to captivate new generations of fans. Warner Brothers Studios is currently producing a remake of Enter the Dragon, one of Lee's most popular films in the West, and the last before his death. Noted Hong Kong Director Andrew Lau is also set to begin work on a Chinese language Bruce Lee biopic film. Meanwhile, a design competition was recently launched to turn Lee's former Hong Kong home into a museum for the star.
GreenLight represents the estates of iconic entertainers, scientists, inventors and other celebrities including Steve McQueen, Johnny Cash, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison and the Wright Brothers. GreenLight licenses personality rights to companies in categories including financial services, automotive, technology, apparel, social expression, health and beauty, home furnishings, and toys for use in advertising, promotions and merchandise.
