The Homeland Security Foundation of America Participates in First Official 9/11 Day of Service
Americans remember and serve in honor of heroes and victims of 9/11
Atlanta, GA, September 12, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Homeland Security Foundation of America (HSFA) takes part in the first official September 11 Day of Service and Remembrance, a day established by President Obama and Congress to honor the victims and heroes of 9/11 through acts of community service.
"One of the best ways to honor the heroes and victims of 9/11 and their families is by reaching out in service to others," said Eric Brown, President and Chairman, HSFA. "There are many opportunities to serve with HSFA and various organizations across America. We hope all able citizens will volunteer in their community on September 11 and make an ongoing commitment to serve throughout the year."
The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of an effort originally launched in 2002 by 9/11 family members and support groups, led by the organization MyGoodDeed, who worked to establish the service day as a way to honor those who died and to rekindle the spirit of unity and compassion that followed the attacks. September 11 was officially recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance for the first time this year by the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, passed with strong bipartisan support and signed into law by President Obama in April.
"We call on all Americans to join in service on September 11 and honor the heroes of that dark day as well as the brave men and women in uniform who continue to protect our country at home and abroad," said President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in a message urging Americans to serve on 9/11.
September 11, 2009 will mark the end of the successful summer phase of President Obama's United We Serve initiative and its transition to a sustained, collaborative, and focused effort to meet community needs. The initiative is being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that improves lives and strengthens communities though volunteering and service.
