NPSA Offers Tips for National Brake Safety Week
The National Portable Storage Association is offering tips on how to prepare for National Brake Safety Week, September 13-19.
Hallandale, FL, September 13, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA), a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry, is warning operators to prepare for National Brake Safety Week.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will conduct brake inspections Sept. 13-19 as part of the Operation Air Brake Campaign dedicated to improving inspection, compliance, maintenance and performance of commercial vehicle brakes throughout North America. CVSA-certified inspectors, brake suppliers and industry partners will conduct enforcement and education activities with drivers and mechanics at truck stops, weigh stations and other locations.
CVSA-certified officers will conduct Level I and Brake-Only inspections, and will deploy performance-based brake testers at a number of inspection locations. CVSA officers will also administer driver surveys and distribute educational brochures.
"A Level 1 inspection includes the drivers credentials: license, medical card, log book, shipping papers, daily vehicle inspection report and annual inspection," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive NPSA. "CVSA will also be checking all lights and safety equipment."
The CVSA's RoadCheck 2009 resulted in 51.6 percent of inspected vehicles being taken out of service for brakes. Brake inspections will take place day and night with the use of roving patrols along with inspectors at fixed weigh stations. The NPSA warns now is the time to ensure all credentials are in order and required safety equipment is in trucks.
"Enforcement will be checking to make sure carriers are property registered with the Unified Carrier Registration Program," said NPSA Operations Manager Joel Rathbone. "There are no credentials required to be carried in the vehicle for UCR. Once a carrier is registered the registration will show on the carrier profile when enforcement puts their USDOT number into the system."
