General H. Hugh Shelton Visits The Cypress of Raleigh

Hugh Shelton, USA (R), 14th Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff held a book signing event at The Cypress campus on Sept. 17. Shelton’s book, Secrets of Success: North Carolina Values-Based Leadership explores through black and white portrait photography, leadership first-hand from 35 men and women with a unique connection to N.C. The book shows how leadership impacted pivotal moments in world politics, business, the military, athletics, religion and the arts. All proceeds from the sale of this book will support leadership and scholarship programs for the General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center at N.C. State University, whose mission is to inspire, educate, and develop values-based leaders committed to personal integrity, professional ethics and selfless service.
Shelton served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces Group and the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Following the Gulf War, he commanded the 82nd Airborne Division, led the Joint Task Force responsible for Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti, and was then promoted to the rank of general and the position of the commander-in-chief of the U.S. Special Operations Command. Later, General Shelton was named the 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, where he was principal military advisor to the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Agency. Following his retirement in 2001, he chose to serve his alma mater, N.C. State University, by creating the General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center.
