Governor Bev Perdue Honorary Co-Host of Enable America Event in Raleigh

North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue will be honorary co-host of Enable America's celebration of Disability Mentoring Day, to be held in Raleigh on October 21. Enable America is a non-profit devoted to improving employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Raleigh, NC, September 30, 2009 --(PR.com)-- North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue will serve as the honorary co-host for Enable America’s celebration of Disability Mentoring Day, to be held at Raleigh’s downtown Marriott, on the morning of October 21.

“Governor Perdue recognizes that efforts to improve employment opportunities for people with disabilities can help build a diverse workforce throughout the state,” said Richard Salem, founder and CEO of Enable America. “We thank her for the support she is giving us as we grow Enable America in North Carolina.”

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and Enable America is using the occasion to introduce new programs into Raleigh and the surrounding area. Since January the organization has been building alliances with local companies. Progress Energy has already joined Enable America as a local partner.

Among the first initiatives will be Disability Mentoring Day programs in October. The Enable America Disability Mentoring Program matches people with disabilities with organizations committed to alleviating barriers to employment. During Disability Mentoring Day, “mentees” get the opportunity to shadow employees at participating companies, learning skills and building relationships that improve their employment opportunities.

“Mentor businesses are finding great benefit in participating,” says Enable America Executive Director Steve LaBour. “The program enables them to tap into an employee pool that is eager to learn more about workplace opportunities while giving businesses valuable insight on the benefits of mentoring and hiring people with disabilities. It is truly a win-win for everyone involved.”

In addition to Progress Energy, a number of prominent Raleigh businesses have agreed to participate in Disability Mentoring Day programs. They include The Royal Bank of Canada, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, Rex HealthCare, WakeMed, SAS, and the Carolina Hurricanes.

The event that the Governor is co-hosting is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required. It will be held on Wednesday, October 21, at Raleigh’s downtown Marriott, from 8am to 10am. To sign up for the event, please call Enable America at (877) 362-2533.
