Latvian IT Company DEAC Opened the Largest Data Centre in the Baltic States
On September 24th in Riga, Maskavas Street 459 the largest Latvian data centre operator – DEAC, opened a new data centre “Riga,” which is the largest and most modern data centre in the Baltic States, as well as the largest investment project of DEAC up to now. It took 2 years to establish the new data centre and 2 988 000 Eur in total were invested in it, including 1 422 870 Eur invested in the building of the data centre, and 1 565 150 Eur invested in infrastructure and equipment.
Riga, Latvia, September 28, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Minister of Regional Development and Local Government Affairs of the Republic of Latvia Edgars Zalans also took part in the opening of the data centre. “This project is a big step in the promotion of competitive capacity of the Latvian information technologies, and, in my opinion, it will also facilitate the development of partnership between the public and private spheres in the IT field,” Edgars Zalans attested in his speech.
The CEO of DEAC Andris Gailitis talked about new export possibilities in his speech, specifying that up to 50% of the new data centre capacity could be used for export. “It is important that the organizations from other countries would use our services, however it is also important that our own organizations wouldn’t be forced to employ data centres in other countries, as it still often happens,” A. Gailitis says, adding that many users don’t even suspect that the majority of internet banks used daily are serviced in neighboring countries, not in Latvia. “We still have something to aspire to,” A. Gailitis emphasized.
“The investment of more than 2 988 000 Eur is a notable contribution to the development of the company and will increase the competitive capacity of DEAC on the European level. The new data centre that matches up to the world standards will bring benefit not only to the company, but also to the competition capacity of the Latvian IT in general. It will serve as a springboard for the speed-up of the Latvian IT services export, thus furthering the recovery of the economy of our country,” A. Gailitis said in his opening speech.
“The investments into foundation of the new data centre were allocated in order to meet the growing needs of clients and to ensure an even better service. The capacity of the existing data centre “Grizinkalns” is almost full with servers of our clients, so the necessity arose to build a new data centre. Up to 8400 servers can be colocated in the server premises of the data centre “Riga” which is 600 square meters in size, and this capacity will be able to satisfy the needs of the large foreign clients,” A. Gailitis attested.
“Many people are not even aware that the different portals, company e-mails, home pages, blogs and other internet services that they use daily and are so accustomed to, are colocated on servers that are located in data centres. The servers collocated in data centres are under constant control and guard and are provided with a microclimate that is necessary for optimal operation,” A. Gailitis expounded.
The total area of the server premises of the new data centre “Riga” is 600 m², and it’s possible to place up to 8400 servers there. It has a modern automatic control system installed that controls the microclimate in server premises, the electric power supply sources, as well as other processes. An uninterrupted and safe working of the data centre is ensured by two independent power supply sources and duplicated cooling devices.
